Why is the information so skimpy on some events ?If John or Jill is going to have a party at one either of their houses, instead of doing the most logical thing which would be to post the time and address on this site, they just put the time and general area. Then you have to email or call them to get the address... This seems silly, and in 99.999% of the time probably IS silly. But it is the right of John or Jill to chose what information is or is not put on a publicly viewable site. Unless they specifically chose to put the information, less is better. Then why do some people put everything ?Hey ! If John want's to put his address, then he gets to do that ! What about events at church or public places ?It is our mission to reach out ! Public places are appropriate places to publish events about. If I don't tell the webmaster what to put ?It is the job of the webmaster to always maintain the privacy of anyone's private information unless instructed specifically otherwise. We don't get legalistic and require the permission in writing or something, but you should be asked first. If I have to put something, what should I put ?The email address is always seemingly the least dangerous thing to publish, though each person would have to be the judge of that in their case. What if I don't WANT to put my email address ?Glad you asked ! We would definitely NOT recommend publishing your work email address, for example. Most of us usually maintain a separate email address just for such uses. You can get one for yourself at yahoo.com or hotmail.com or netscape.net, for example. Who to talk to about deciding how much to put ?Depends on your level of comfort, but if the paranoia gets too deep then you might not be in the right place for sponsoring an event in the first place. Pick one or more people whose opinions you respect in such an area, then make a decision, and let the webmaster know. Are there ways to put info that can't be read by computers or unauthorized users ?That is actually two different questions. We can easily put your address as an image for example, so web crawlers such as google or other robots can't read it. But that only takes into consideration computers, a human predator could still read it fine. But we'd be happy to do it ! You see this type of approach frequently on lots of sites. Another approach would be to require members to log in to this site and get the information. We could do this now, but the administration of that type of a site is a bit of a pain in the neck, is possible to defeat, and presents a large impediment to our users. So we probably wouldn't do that. Is there such a thing as perfectly safe ?To be fair for all concerned, there is no such thing as eliminating all risk, we just want to all work to keep risks within bounds that reasonable people could consider a best effort. Is this Privacy Policy Open for Review ?Always ! Our privacy policy is like anyone else's in that it is determined by technologies and events in the world around us. It's a best attempt at something we would rather not have to do anyway, but must. Please direct any suggestions for improvements to Communications Coordinator |
